I must be getting fragile these days. Scored another dose of pink eye again, but I carried on doing my Popeye impression with one eye closed. Helped a little, but it was still amazingly difficult to make visual decisions like that.

Not much to say about this one. I made a few stabs at getting “Overpass Sketch” into color, but it just never worked out. In a nutshell, I think I just can’t compromise and organize my shapes well on this one. Interestingly, I did a very similar sketch of an overpass a few years ago and tried to get it in various mediums (including watercolor) and I just met the same failures.

The issue isn’t the image itself, but what I want to do with it, which is to use the frontal bridge as a frame for the background. The problem becomes spreading the values out well while maintaining this compositional framing, and they just won’t jive together. Or, to be fair, I can’t make them jive together. Despite the difference in imagery, it’s almost exactly the same problem I had with “Nocturnal News” from Dec. 5; using heavy values to frame a lighter element.

Yesterday morning I took a hike down the railroad tracks near my house looking for something a little different to draw. RR tracks are always a little surreal. Despite being in the middle of the city, once you get out there you feel like you’ve entered a no-man’s land removed from any real sense of civilization. All the urban sounds of cars, people, sirens, and engines dissappear, and you find yourself in a wasteland of discarded debris enveloped by trees that appear to have suffered from their close proximity to the tracks. But with civilization goes a sense of safety. In reality, I never got further than a few blocks from my home, but you easily feel like if something bad were to happen, it could be months before you’re found.

I did this sketch from beneath the overpass of Sugar Creek (in the forefront) and The Plaza (in the background center) on a stretch of track that is rarely used now, and spent the better part of today trying to make it into a watercolor. Unfortunately, the painting didn’t work out, so it’s back to the original sketch to determine what went wrong and try again. Since it could be tomorrow before I have a finished watercolor, I am posting the original sketch today. Enjoy.

I thought I would try bending the flat plane with the construction composition. Eh, it didn’t work like the first two, but I was unsure about this from the drawing stage anyway. Still, you never know until the end. I think it’s a fine watercolor. I simply prefer the first two more.

Today’s post is a bit of an anniversary. Construction #2 marks the 50th image I have posted to my blog! Wow! It has been a difficult ride, but well worth it. Here’s to the next 50…

A big thanks to everyone that has taken the time to leave positive feedback since I started. I’m afraid I’ve gotten a little lax on responding to each and every one, but they’ve all been noted with sincere appreciation. Keep stopping by, and I’ll keep painting.

I spent today with my good friend Rob out on the Catawba River. We headed out thinking it was going to be a cheery 73 degree weather day, but it was grey and felt like 20 on the water. A great day nonetheless. The river is a small adventure every time. So is Rob. I’ve never had a dull moment with him. I’ll dedicate today’s post to you, Roberto. Hope you like it.

We ended up pulling onto a bank near three parallel bridges. Two are for trains, old as mud but both still in use. The third is a highway with cars and trucks zipping back and forth non-stop. I had a blast sitting on the bank working on this. I took the faithful moleskine since it was compact, but this felt a bit different. I’m usually focusing on a thing, an object, and painting it on 8″ x 12″. Here I was painting a large open space, and I had to do it on 5″ x 7″. The drawing came out well, with nice organized shapes. I began the painting there and put in the details at home.

I went a different route for today’s post. I’ve noted before how the structures I develop as subject matter are endangered, if they have the clout to warrant that term. On the flip side, there is a lot of new construction occuring as well, mostly condos. This work-in-progress is two blocks from my home, and is the beginning of a “living community” with little fake houses and little fake streets with fake names going to fake stores and fake laundromats.

Personal opinion aside, though, I’ve been watching this (and many, many others like it all over the place) go up since I pass it most days in the morning. I liked the simple abstract blocked design it creates while it lacks the garish ornamentation it will recieve in its later stages. The basic color pattern of brown pressed board with a few patches of white Tyvek makes great contrasts with the sky and dark holes that will be windows.

Instead of modeling my image, I decided to make up some color variations, and returned to a flat structural composition like I used in earlier posts from October 19. I think it worked okay. I may try some more.
