This one is all about speed. I gave myself 20 minutes to produce a watercolor, and here are the results. Needless to say, I found myself running out of time before I had hardly started, which usually means resorting to alot of black outlining.

The point of a project like this is to exclude the brain from the process. No time to nitpick and fuss; hardly enough time for the physical painting. Not a great painting, but sure enough there are some cool unexpected passages that would’ve never happened had my head had anything to do with it. Stupid brain.

Another old grill within a stone’s throw of Famous Kitchen, but this one is still in operation. The marquee in the window exclaims “Be Happy! Fight Night!” in reference, I assume, to the De La Hoya/Mayweather fight last weekend. Hm. I wonder if that satellite dish could pick it up in Hi Def.

As promised, here’s the (not so) Famous Kitchen. It’s saddled next to a garage that’s still in operation, but the restaurant itself has recently closed. It certainly appears to have been around a while judging from the age of the building and the signage.

My recent delay in producing watercolors of these structures has proven costly. The rate of closures has accelerated at an incredible pace. Some of the buildings I have previously painted and posted here are now gone, and so many that I had intended to do have closed, many of them already torn down. I originally began the project of “archiving” them because I saw the end approaching. I was mistaken, as the moment was already upon me. I should’ve started this a year earlier. Now I fear I am losing a race against the clock. Note the “For Sale” sign in the sketch to the left. The property is worth an astronomical amount due to it’s location close to downtown (or “uptown” as was dictated a few years back).
